Wedding Fun and Fire Trucks

April 6, 2008

This weekend we attended a wedding for a friend of ours. Big Monkey used to work with the Groom. The Groom is now a Firefighter in a different city. Overall the wedding was nice. Everyone was dressed well. The Bride was beautiful. They took a “group picture” before everyone exited the church so that they have a record of who was there. It was a cute idea I thought. Their “guest book” was a nice leather bound scrapbook with photos of them together from the past 4-ish years that they have been together. Every other page was left blank for guests to write notes and sign their names. There were seven bridesmaids and six groomsmen. The ceremony started right on time, maybe even a couple of minutes early (this is almost a miracle because the Bride is NEVER early to anything). The ceremony lasted about 35 minutes.

We then drove to the reception site, although we stopped at a gas station so a friend could buy a lotto ticket and I got a candy bar since dinner was almost two hours away (I hadn’t had much to eat earlier in the day). We got to the reception site and it started raining. We got in the building and settled on a table. Apparently we smelled funny or something because no one joined us the rest of the night. Near the entrance of the building, they had multiple photos of their parents/grandparents/etc from their weddings and such with a sign that read “all because two people fell in love.” Cute idea. The had some light hors dourves and an open bar with sangria, wine, and beer, along with non-alcoholic drinks like soda, water and tea. The wedding party arrived and we introduced and then the fun began. There was story telling and jokes and lots of music. And the guy who was already drunk before we even had dinner. (His wife got tired of dancing with him on the dance floor–no one else was dancing yet–so she took him home.) Dinner was served as a buffet with roast beef, chicken, potatoes, green beans and rolls. There was a few other things I think but I didn’t eat those. During dinner, the photographer brought a laptop to the Bride and Groom’s table. It had all the pictures that he had already taken from the ceremony and then their other staged shots. I thought this was very cool to be able to see your pictures so soon. After they got to see them, the photographer left the laptop on a table near the end of the buffet line so we could check out a few pictures as we walked by. There were two cakes. A fancy regular cake and also a Fire Truck Groom’s cake. Lots of dancing and some crazy drunk people…and some crazy people who weren’t drunk. We stayed until the very end and they left through a row of very large sparklers and got into a Fire Truck with the lights going and sirens/horns on and off. That was probably the COOLEST part of the whole event. Big Monkey was quite jealous. I had to remind him that while it was cool, he was not a Fireman when we got married. All in all everyone had a good time and it was a nice event.

Now here are a collection of quotes heard throughout the evening (Some have been edited to remove identity or poor language choice):

Groom has walked in, looks calm. The bridesmaids are walking down there’s….six and we’re only on number four. They are wearing like a dark tan dress.  The bride’s about to come in, I’ll put you on speaker but you’ll have to be quiet. –All of these were from a gentleman on his cell phone the ENTIRE ceremony so his wife could listen in.

Okay I’ll be quiet! –Heard during the silence before the Bride’s procession from wife on speakerphone.

I promised Groom I would table dance at his wedding whenever he got married. –Heard from family friend (who did “table dance” on a small stage platform)

I sure hope nothing big happens in our city tomorrow because we’re not going to be worth crap! –Heard from intoxicated Fireman

It was a fun and interesting night.
