Vegas Vacation-Day Two-Thursday

June 20, 2008

We got up at 8am, got our stuff packed and headed over to IHOP for breakfast. I had strawberry french toast, very yummy. Little Monkey got to have a fruit plate. (Sadly, I was quite happy for him that he got to order off the menu. This was the first time at a real restaurant for him to order something.) We were pretty lax on counting his phes most of the week because he didn’t want to eat much of anything. It was very hard to give up that control and allow him to be low almost every single day. We figured it was better for him to be low and eating mostly fruits than to be high. After breakfast we drove over to Walmart to get some food, diapers and a new umbrella stroller since the airline sent ours back to Orlando! (We forgot to buy the stroller and remembered a few hours later.) As we arrived at Walmart, Big Monkey got a phone call from Delta saying that they had our umbrella stroller. They asked if we would be picking it up. Big Monkey asked where is it at? Delta says, Orlando. Um, no. We’ll get it in six days when we get back.

We drove to the Hoover Dam and there were nice mountains all along the way. We got out at the Hoover Dam and took pictures and walked on the Dam. It was a little nerve racking for Aunt S and I but we both walked on it and looked around. They are currently building a very large bridge that goes above the Hoover Dam so that you will not have to actually drive ON the Hoover Dam. It is VERY high in the air and I’m glad it was not done for us to drive on. A few people wanted to take the tour at the dam, but Little Monkey couldn’t go, I didn’t really want to go, Aunt Sarah didn’t want to go and Big Monkey didn’t really care. We decided that we would all take our rental car and drive ahead while Grandpa, Aunt K and Uncle K stayed and went on the Power Plant tour. We stopped in the gift shop on the way out to get a shot glass to add to our collection and Big Monkey got a “Big Dam Mug” to take to work.

The four of us (Big Monkey, Little Monkey, Aunt S and I) drove to Kingman where we were going to have lunch and wait for the others. This is not quite what happened. We took lots of pictures along the way and ended up on Route 66. We stopped at the Visitor’s Center and got a map and decided we would take Route 66 to Flagstaff. It was supposed to take a little bit longer but there would be NO traffic on the road (this is because there is virtually NOTHING on Route 66!). We ate at Mr. D’z Diner right across from the Visitor’s Center for lunch. They had the best Root Beer any of us had had before.

We spent a lot of time driving on Route 66 on very long straight roads with not much around except some mountains. We did see a man stop on the side of the road to relieve himself and Big Monkey honked the horn at him. After the Power Plant tour, Grandpa, Uncle K and Aunt K were also headed to Flagstaff; they took the interstate and actually did beat us there. We decided they were doing over 90mph because at one point they had called us and were 20 miles ahead of us on I40. When we called about ten minutes later, they had gained even more miles on us and we were doing about 88mph (Speed limit was 75mph but no one went even close to that-I think that is because there is no one on the roads!).

We got to our hotel, the Embassy Suites and checked into our room. We had a two room suite with a pull out couch but decided we would be more comfortable with another room. They were SOLD OUT and so Grandpa and Uncle K stayed at another hotel just down the road. We went out to dinner at Garcia’s, a Mexican place, and the food was quite good. Little Monkey ended up watching a little bit of his dvd to keep him happy but overall he was good. After dinner we stopped at Target to get the umbrella stroller we forgot to buy at Walmart and an air mattress for Little Monkey to sleep on to make things more comfortable. I found a bathing suit that I had bought at 50% off and it was now 75% off so I got it and will return one with the 50% off receipt. Aunt S found a cute dress also on clearance for just $7. We got back to our hotel to settle in. Aunt K and Uncle K wanted to go in the hot tub but they had drained it earlier in the day and it was not very warm. So they went to the other hotel to use theirs. We remembered that we forgot to get the air mattress at Target, so Big Monkey had to go back to get it! Aunt S, Little Monkey and I watched tv and then went to bed.
